Nagpur: The 300-bedded dedicated Mother & Child Division at the 1,020-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC), Wanadongri, has marked a major clinical milestone with the successful surgical intervention on a newborn just two days old. The achievement highlights the rapid rise of SMHRC as a hub for advanced neonatal and paediatric care in Central India.

In just two years, SMHRC has established itself as a leading centre for Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Interventional Radiology, Urosurgery and GI Surgery. Its capabilities have now expanded further with the addition of Paediatric Surgery services.

The hospital performed its first neonatal surgery on a 2.047 kg baby girl from Gorewada, Nagpur, born via LSCS and diagnosed with Imperforate Anus, a congenital condition that blocks normal bowel function and requires immediate surgical correction. Paediatric Surgeon Dr. Tushar Thakre performed an Anoplasty, marking SMHRC’s first paediatric/neonatal surgical procedure.

The Department of Paediatrics, led by Dr. C. M. Bokade, coordinated clinical management, while the NICU team under Dr. Kush Jhunjhunwala—along with Dr. Nilesh Darvhekar, Dr. Veena Hasnini, and residents Dr. Parthiv, Dr. Diksha and Dr. Shubham—ensured continuous pre- and post-operative monitoring. NICU and OT nursing teams, including Sr. Aradhana (In-charge), Sr. Priti, Sr. Zode, Sr. Sarika, Sr. Shubhangi and Br. Hritik, played a crucial role throughout the process.

Administrative coordination was facilitated by Dr. Rucha Done, CA Manish, Shri Ahmindra Jain and Sr. Vishakha, enabling smooth inter-departmental functioning during the critical case.

Dr. Sudhir Singh, AMS-SMHRC, highlighted the contribution of the Anaesthesia team—Dr. Gunjan Badwaik, Dr. Karuna Gaikwad, Dr. Priyanka Tikait and Dr. Venkatesh Bhalerao—who managed the delicate neonatal anaesthesia with precision. Diagnostic support was provided by teams led by Dr. Smita Pakhmode, Dr. Anand Hatgaonkar and Dr. Vaishali Dhawan.

Dr. Vasant Gawande, CMS-SMHRC, praised the seamless collaboration across departments and noted the profound gratitude expressed by the newborn’s family. He confirmed that the surgery was conducted free of cost under the Sukanya Card Scheme introduced by DMIHER (DU), which provides free medical treatment (excluding medicines and consumables) up to 18 years of age for every girl child born at SMHRC.

Dr. Anup Marar, Director – Off Campus, DMIHER (DU), congratulated the team and affirmed that the successful surgery reflects SMHRC’s mission to deliver affordable, accessible and compassionate healthcare, supported by a five-tier, full-time specialist hierarchy.

SMHRC’s healthcare model continues to draw attention across India, with several institutions visiting the hospital to study its rational, cost-effective and quality-driven approach to patient care.
