Nagpur: In a significant advancement for law enforcement in India, the implementation of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita-2023, scheduled to be enforced from July this year, heralds the introduction of state-of-the-art Mobile Forensic Vans (MFVs). The MFVs, operated by officers of the rank of Sub-Divisional Police Officer in rural areas and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in urban centres, represent a significant enhancement in the criminal justice system. They are equipped with cutting-edge forensic technology and staffed by trained professionals, ensuring swift and efficient collection, analysis, and preservation of crucial evidence at crime scenes.

An integral component of the MFV initiative is the introduction of an online software system, a pioneering development in India’s forensic landscape. This innovative platform facilitates seamless coordination between MFV personnel, law enforcement agencies, and forensic laboratories, streamlining the investigative process and expediting case resolution.

Under the stewardship of Director General of Police (Legal and Technical) Sanjay Kumar Verma and Director Sangeete Ghumatkar, the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories is spearheading initiatives to fortify forensic capabilities across the state. A pivotal endeavour includes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Digital Forensics in Pune, aimed at advancing expertise in this critical domain.

The directorate is at the forefront of integrating modern technologies into forensic operations, with plans underway to implement a suite of sophisticated software solutions. These encompass a robust data centre, advanced document management systems, and enterprise resource planning tools, underscoring a commitment to efficiency and efficacy in forensic investigations.

Recognizing the escalating threat of cybercrime in tandem with the proliferation of internet services, the directorate is prioritizing the modernization and expansion of the cybercrime division. Efforts are underway to alleviate backlogs and bolster capacities to effectively address the growing incidence of cyber-related offenses, reaffirming a proactive stance in combating digital threats.

The introduction of MFVs and the concurrent advancements in forensic technology herald a new era in criminal investigations in India. By leveraging state-of-the-art resources and streamlined processes, law enforcement agencies are poised to enhance evidentiary standards, expedite case resolutions, and strengthen public safety in alignment with the evolving dynamics of crime and technology.
