Sanitation worker tries to immolate self at Nagpur District Collector’s office

Nagpur: Tension ran high at the office of Nagpur District Collector when a sanitation worker suddenly arrived there and tried to immolate self by pouring petrol on himself on Thursday. An alert policeman prevented the man from setting himself on fire.

The sanitation worker has been identified as Vindo Nandkishore Mehroliya (52), a resident of Yerkheda, Kamptee.

According to police, Mehroliya has been working as a temporary sanitary worker at the food and civil supplies office in Teka Naka since 1981. He works for two hours daily and is paid Rs1,200 per month. Mehroliya has been pleading with the authorities that he be made permanent, but in vain.

The authorities told him that they cannot take a decision on his request as only the District Collector has the powers . Subsequently, Mehroliya had submitted an application to the District Collector but according to rules, there is no provision of making him permanent employee.

Depressed over the developments, Mehroliya decided to take the sensational step and tried to immolate self at the premises of the District Collector’s office around 11 am on Thursday.
