Nagpur: The incident of broad day light murder of extortionist in Sakkardara Budhwari Bazaar prompted he police commissioner Dr K Venkatesham to take his officers to task, and even questioned the need of police. “If citizens have to pick up weapons, what is police for?” shot CP Venkatesham.

Notorious goon Ashish Raut was butchered by yet unidentified vegetable vendors using sharp blades on September 9 in Sakkardara. Ashish had 16 serious offences registered against him including two murders. He was externed from city limits and he returned to Nagpur just one-and-half months ago. Since his return, he had resumed his extortion business at Budhwari Bazar.

Venkatesham asked why nobody knew Ashish was collecting extortion in filmy style at Budhwari Bazar ? He said common citizens are losing faith in police and cops have to win back their trust. He strongly pressed the cops to force their informers to gather information about criminals.

Venkatesham said those taking law into their own hands will not be tolerated and also instructed officers to solve pressing cases quickly.
