Nagpur: Following a surge in rape cases across the country, Women Safety Initiatives are in place in Nagpur.
In 2019, Nagpur police had launched an initiative in which the women stranded at any desolate place with no public transport in sight or suffering a snag in their vehicle expected cops to turn up and escort them home. This was done from 9 pm to 5 am. All she has to do is dial 100 or 1091 or any nearby police station.
In 2022, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and Nagpur police joined hands to spread awareness about preventing human trafficking and crime against women with the involvement of students as volunteers. The initiative for the prevention of human trafficking and crimes against women and children was launched by Alliance Against Centres of Trafficking (ACT), a coalition of five NGOs, in partnership with the Nagpur police. The coalition consists of Vipla Foundation, Pratham, Prakruthi Trust, Yuva Rural Association (YRA) and Freedom Firm.
In 2023, Nagpur police identified 330 dark spots following the rape of a college girl at an the isolated road stretch in the city. The ‘black spots’ have been identified and measures like having enough lighting and installing CCTV cameras are being taken. Damini Squads for women’s safety conduct patrolling of such isolated spots. Besides, these squads pay regular visits to schools, colleges, hostels, and slum areas to create awareness about women safety and crime against women. ‘Police Didi’ also visits schools, colleges, coaching classes, and public recreation places. They hold meetings of women and vigilance committees, and guide the women and girls of all ages on related sensitive issues.
In 2024, in a groundbreaking initiative, the Govt of India has launched a scheme to empower women in maintaining peace and harmony. The Red Saree Commando scheme, which aims to expand the role of women in community safety, kicked off with a pilot project under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan on May 22 in Nagpur. The dress code for these Commandos is Red Saree, Red Cap and whistle. These Mahila Commandos are clad in red sari, cap and carry a whistle.
Women safety tips:
• Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings, wherever you are.
• Don’t be taken by surprise. Be aware and be prepared.
• Stand tall and walk confidently. Don’t show fear. Don’t look like a victim.
• Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave right away and get help if needed.
• Plan your night out let someone know where you are going and when you will come back to home.
• Carry a charged mobile phone and put a trusted taxi number in your contact.
• Never accept a drink from someone you don’t know or don’t trust.
• Don’t walk alone after dark, plan ahead.
• Avoid taking shortcuts, Stick to the routs you know well.
• Never accept lift from strangers or unregistered taxis.
• Be aware from chain snatcher while morning and evening walk.
• Don’t trust on person who claims to be Policemen. Check his Identity card and then deal to him. In case of doubt call 100 to verify.
• Don’t upload too much personal details on Facebook, twitter etc.
• Try to avoid accepting friendship and start chatting with unknown person.
• Avoid uploading your private moments or bedroom pictures on social media and even not on your computers.
• See your Webcam on computer is plugged out when not in use and in your mobile phones camera be kept in reverse direction.
• Be aware from hidden cameras at changing room in malls, hotels.
