RTI Reveals ₹1,663 Crore Spent on Two Ethanol Projects at Panipat Refinery

Nagpur: Important information about the ethanol projects at Indian Oil Corporation’s Panipat refinery has emerged through an RTI response. The company has built two ethanol projects at Panipat at a total cost of ₹1,663 crore.

According to the RTI response, ₹909 crore was spent on the 2G ethanol project, which has an annual production capacity of 3 crore litres. Rice straw is used to produce ethanol at the project, which became operational on April 23, 2023.

Meanwhile, ₹754 crore was spent on the 3G ethanol project, which has an annual capacity of 4.2 crore litres. Off-gas is used for this project, which began operations on March 28, 2023.

However, IOCL refused to provide information on the actual annual ethanol production from the two projects, citing commercial confidentiality.
