Rotary Club of Nagpur will be presenting its ‘Vocational Excellence Award’ for 2014 to Dr. J. J. Irani, the steel man of India by all Rotary Clubs. Dr. Irani was the former MD of TATA Steel. The award will be presented in a function to be organized at Persistent Auditorium, IT Park on Saturday, June, 21, 2014, informed President of Rotary Club Nagpur Prashant Kale in the press conference organized at Tilak Patrakar Bhawan on Thursday.

Dr. J. J. Irani has a special connection with Nagpur as he pursued his B.Sc. degree course from Science College in Nagpur in 1956 with a Gold Medal in Geology and a M.Sc. (Geology) degree from Nagpur University in 1958, both with first class. He also obtained M.Met and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sheffield, UK, in 1960 and 1963 respectively, with a Gold Medal for the Ph.D. Thesis. Benaras Hindu University conferred upon him the Degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa in 2004. In 1993, the University of Sheffield conferred upon him the honorary degree of “Doctor of Metallurgy”. Dr. Irani’s contribution in the turnaround of Tisco (Tata Iron and Steel Company, the earlier avatar of Tata Steel) was a classic example of good governance and could serve as an excellent case study for management students.
