River cleaning drive by NMC gains momentum

Nagpur: The river cleaning campaign initiated by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has gathered momentum. NMC initiated the cleanliness drive to free Nag River, Pivli River and Pohra River of any blockages and encroachments before monsoon.

However, in the aftermath of floods that affected several low lying areas of Nagpur last year, Dr Abhijit Chaudhari, Commissioner of NMC, has directed the officials to kick start the cleanliness drive starting February 1. NMC has pushed in a total of 6 poclains that consist of 1 big and 5 small machines.NMC will remove silt, soil and deepen the river bed wherever necessary.

The cleanliness work has been implemented simultaneously at Ambazari, Ashok Chowk, Pardi fly-over, Gorewada area and Mankapur area stated Rajiv Gaikwad, Chief Engineer of NMC. The three rivers of Nagpur that consist of Nag river with length of 16.58 kms, Pili river of 17.42 kms and Pohra river of 15.17 kms has around 232 drains located at Hattinala, Gaddigodam, Balabhaupeth, Boriyapura, Dobi Nagar, Lakdipul, Takiya, Narendra Nagar and Buradnala.

All the points will be cleared with the help of poclains and manually. Gaikwad along with Superintending Engineer Manoj Talewar inspected the cleanliness drive on Thursday.
