According to reports, the incident took place in the hospital’s casualty department when the doctor prioritised the treatment of a critically ill patient. The decision allegedly angered the police personnel and his son, who reportedly assaulted the resident doctor.
Following the incident, the doctor approached Tehsil Police Station to lodge a complaint. However, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) alleged that the doctor was made to wait at the police station for nearly six hours.
MARD further claimed that instead of receiving immediate support, the doctor who reported the assault was booked under serious charges, including wrongful confinement and endangering life. A separate case has also reportedly been registered against the police personnel based on the assault complaint.
Taking serious note of the incident, MARD has demanded an impartial investigation, the arrest of the police personnel and his son, and the suspension of the police personnel involved.
The resident doctors’ association has warned that doctors at Mayo Hospital will launch an indefinite strike if their demands are not met. Maharashtra MARD has also warned of a possible statewide agitation.
Meanwhile, police officials have maintained that cases have been registered based on complaints from both sides. They stated that no party has been favoured and that the facts will emerge only after a proper investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety and security of doctors working in government hospitals, particularly those handling emergency and critical cases.
