Nagpur: The Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which typically pumps 220 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water to Nagpur city, has been supplying only 190 MLD over the past three days due to severe flooding in the Kanhan River.
The reduced water supply has particularly affected areas serviced by the Kanhan Feeder Main pipeline. The reason for this disruption is that the Kanhan River has been in full spate, with all 16 gates of the Navegaon Khairy Dam being opened due to excessive rainfall in the upstream Satpura Valley.
As a result, the pumps in Dry Well No.1 (DW-1) on the right bank of the river are completely submerged in mud and sand, making it impossible to lift water from the river. The pumps will remain inoperative until the water level recedes enough to allow for the deployment of an excavator to clear the submerged suction pipes and restore DW-1 to operational status.
According to the Water Resources Department (WRD-Irrigation), the dam gates of the Navegaon Khairy Dam are expected to be closed on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. We anticipate that the water supply will return to normal shortly after this.
As a result of this shutdown, the water supply of the following Command Areas will be affected:
