Nagpur News: After news appeared on some media, when the Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar took over as Vice Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University in April 2014, he discovered about the growing encroachments on Nagpur University’s 70-acre land adjacent to the postgraduate campus. Anoop Kumar was apprised of how, being Divisional Commissioner, he was empowered to remove all the illegal eateries that were operating in about 7.729 acre area, housing several NU departments and hostels.

Anoop Kumar’s efforts bore fruits when the police raided and closed all the eateries operating without valid food and eating licenses under the Bombay Police Act, 1951.

However, the audacity of the owners of these eateries can be seen late in the evening when all of them operate surreptitiously.

Whenever any youth driving cars or motorcycles stops in front of the so called closed eatery, a security guard suddenly appears out of nowhere. He promptly tells the guests that they should park their vehicles somewhere else and come and that the hotel is open.

He then takes the guests and through a wicked gate inside the hotel. Food, drinks (liquor) are rampantly sold. Some of these guests come to pick up the parcel of their favourite saoji dishes.

Otherwise, these eateries look with locked gates and doors. What once looked illuminated with colourful lights beckoning guests to come to their hotels, now depicts a picture of haunted appearance, while in reality they are all operating surreptitiously.

The police and the local municipal authorities should take a tour in the night to verify the activities in these eateries. Or are they operating in connivance with the authorities?
