This month Prayas Sevankur invited a well-known doctor couple, Dr Ashish Satav and Dr Kavita Satav from Melghat (Amravati) to share their story. The couple doctor is dedicatedly working for tribal since last 18 years. Dr Ashish is MD (Doctor of Medicine) wherein Dr Kavita is MS (Master of Science) eye surgeon.

Dr Ashish Satav and his wife Dr. Kavita Satav left their secure and settled life to start NGO MAHAN (M-Meditation, A-AIDS, H-Health, A-De-Addiction, N-Nutrition) in 1997. MAHAN provides health care in Melghat region which is said to be one of the poorest and most deprived parts of India

MAHAN Trust is the only NGO in Melghat region providing medical care and Health Services to the tribal communities living in that area.

Dr. Ashish Satav, while he was a medical student at Government Medical College he decided to start a hospital at Melghat. He was influenced by his grandfather Vasantrao Bombatkar (Sarvodaya leader) since childhood this motivated by him and hence started the NGO Mahan. He always aimed to serve the village for the betterment of the country.

While doing his medical preparation from Government College, Nagpur, he visited various rural and tribal areas. He realized that the tribal area needs medical facilities to a much larger extent as compared to rural areas. Dr Ashish while doing his MD lived a very simple. In 1998 he resigned from the MGIMS, Sevagram and registered a voluntary organization named MAHAN and started hospital in Melghat. In the beginning, there was no financial support from anybody. He used his own savings for running hospital. A few months later Dr Sushila Nayar provided financial support. She was highly influenced by Gandhi’s ideology like Dr Ashish Satav. Since then MAHAN is running in partnership with Kasturba Health Society, Sevagram.
