Nagpur: In an extraordinary turn of events, the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) opened its doors after sunset at 10:30 PM on Thursday, in an unprecedented move, permitting the arrest of Ritika Maloo, the key accused in the infamous Ram Jhula accident case. The decision came after the sessions court quashed Maloo’s bail, paving the way for her arrest by the State CID 214 days after the tragic incident.
Ritika Maloo had been under the radar since her Mercedes ran over and killed two individuals on Ram Jhula. The case had garnered significant public attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the delayed action on the part of law enforcement. Following intense legal deliberations, the sessions court’s ruling on Wednesday enabled the CID to act swiftly.
In a rare legal development, the JMFC opened the courtroom late at night, allowing the arrest of Maloo even after sunset, despite legal stipulations that generally prevent the arrest of women during nighttime. The move was seen as a significant step, reflecting the seriousness of the case and the urgency of action.
A team of ten CID officers, including two female constables, conducted a midnight operation at the Maloo residence located in Deshpande Layout, Wardhaman Nagar. The CID team first targeted one of the homes in the Maloo family’s complex. Led by the female officers, the team spent approximately 40 minutes inside the property before exiting without Maloo in custody.
The search continued as the officers proceeded to another bungalow within the same lane, which belongs to the Maloo family. Details regarding the outcome of the second search were not immediately available.
The arrest of Ritika Maloo is a critical development in the Ram Jhula accident case, marking a turning point after months of legal wrangling. The court’s decision to facilitate the late-night arrest has been widely described as unprecedented, and the case is expected to proceed with heightened scrutiny in the coming days.
