Nagpur: Khush Thakre and Lokesh Dohale of Nagpur won their opening round matches of the Yonex Sunrise GH Raisoni Memorial Maharashtra Sub-Junior (Under-15 & Under-17) State Selection Badminton Tournament that got under way on Sunday.
In the boys U-15 group, Khush defeated Pune’s Adwit Babar 15- 10, 16-14 while Lokesh was stretched to the limit by Washim’s Viraj Kad but the city lad prevailed 13-15, 15-11, 15-13. In other matches, Veer Chitnis bt Tanishq Singhania 15-7, 15-13; Riyansh Lanjewar bt Aarav Belsare 15-7, 15-8 and Vihan Nimkar bt Om Rathod 15-8, 15-7.
The five-day tournament has attracted 747 entries across 10 events, bringing together the finest young badminton talent from all corners of Maharashtra. The tournament is powered by Raisoni Foundation, supported by Coal India Limited, and organised by Nagpur District Badminton Association (NDBA) under the auspices of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA). Max Healthcare is the Medical Partner, and Apna Dhaba NH1 is the Food & Catering Partner for the event.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by eminent personalities including Kundatai Vijaykar, President, NDBA; Dr Mrinalini Naik, Project Director, Raisoni Foundation; Mangesh Kashikar, Sr Vice-President, MBA & Secretary, NDBA; Vishwas Deswandikar, Deputy Referee; Parijaat Natu, Sudip Barve, Shailesh Kulkarni, Vinay Joshi, Aditya Kaskhedikar, Samir Shinde, Anant Apte, Madhavi Kashikar Hedaoo, Gurdeep Singh Arora. Sudip Barve and Shailesh Kulkarni, who have represented India at prestigious global tournaments, including the 2024 Olympics, were feted.
