New Delhi/Nagpur: Amid reports that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will take the reins of the Congress party from Sonia Gandhi after returning from leave, leaders close to Rahul have been elevated to higher party positions.

Ajay Maken, who led the Congress party in the worst ever defeat in Delhi Assembly elections, was on Monday appointed the Delhi Congress Pradesh Committee (DPCC) chief.

In Maharashtra, former chief minister Ashok Chavan was appointed the state chief. He was rewarded for a good electoral performance in Maharashtra Assembly elections, in which the party fared poorly. Sanjay Nirupam has been chosen to lead the party in Mumbai.

Bharat Singh Solanki was appointed Gujarat Congress chief.

The rejig was in continuation to Rahul Gandhi’s campaign of revamping the beleaguered party. Speculations are rife that Rahul’s sister Priyanka Gandhi will soon join active politics by accepting a general secretary post in the Congress party. This was, however, denied by Priyanka’s office.

Being the Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi wants to give an important role for Priyanka Gandhi to play in the party. According to sources, Rahul gandhi’s efforts are now being considered by the party seniors as well.

Rahul is currently on a leave to undisclosed destination.
