Power bill crackdown: MSEDCL targets 1.56 lakh defaulters in Nagpur to recover Rs 120 cr

Nagpur: In a major enforcement push, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched an aggressive recovery drive against massive power bill defaults across the Nagpur Circle. With dues soaring to Rs 120 crore from 1.56 lakh consumers, the state utility has initiated door-to-door action to curb rising arrears.

Taking serious note of the spiralling default, Chief Engineer Dilip Dodke is personally supervising the campaign, directing teams formed at every sub-division to trace defaulters and ensure immediate payment. The Nagpur Circle comprises Nagpur and Wardha districts, where customers from domestic, commercial and industrial LT categories have failed to clear their bills.

Breaking usual practice of conducting recovery operations in the final quarter of the financial year, MSEDCL has kicked off proceedings early as the third quarter nears its end, signalling an urgent need to stabilize finances.

Disconnection warning & heavy reconnection cost

The electricity utility has issued a stern warning: connections of consumers with arrears above Rs 1,000 will be disconnected without further notice.
Reconnection will come at a steep cost, requiring customers to clear all dues and pay additional charges of Rs 310 for single-phase and Rs 520 for three-phase connections

MSEDCL has appealed to consumers to act before their homes, businesses and industries are plunged into darkness.

The MSEDCL mentioned that in Nagpur District,1,32,251consumers have not yet paid Rs 107.35 crore of which domestic consumers are 1,09,009, the commercial ones are 19,503 and industrial consumers number 3,739. In Wardha district, the number of consumers who have not paid their bills are 24,535 and the outstanding amount is Rs 13.80 crore. The bifurcation of consumers is domestic 21,423, commercial-2,280 and industrial-832.

The drive is expected to intensify over the coming weeks, potentially affecting thousands unless immediate payments are made.
