Nagpur: Poonam Tower, located in one of Nagpur’s most prime and expensive areas, has remained incomplete for nearly three decades. Now, fresh reports suggest the government may move to demolish the long-stalled structure. The project, which began in 1991, was halted after authorities cited security concerns related to the nearby Vidhan Bhavan.

However, a key question has resurfaced: when taller buildings now stand in the same vicinity, why is Poonam Tower alone being labelled a security threat?

Speaking to Nagpur Today, Poonam Tower owner N. Kumar dismissed reports of the building’s demolition and strongly criticized the government’s stand.
“This building poses no threat to the Vidhan Bhavan. The government has filed a petition against me only to pressure me. Ironically, it was this very government that granted permission for the tower in the first place,” Kumar said.

He further alleged that he is being blackmailed and harassed for financial gain under the pretext of security.

Security concern… or something else?

The Poonam Tower project had initially received all mandatory approvals. Construction was stopped only after several floors were completed, citing the sensitivity of the Vidhan Bhavan area. Yet in the years that followed, multiple high-rise buildings were constructed nearby without objection. This has prompted citizens to ask: why is only Poonam Tower considered problematic?

Three-decade dispute, massive losses for the developer

For nearly 30 years, the project has remained trapped in legal proceedings, government files, and administrative indecision. The prolonged delay has caused substantial financial losses to the developer, while a valuable parcel of land in central Nagpur has remained unused. Today, the unfinished tower stands as a symbol not just of security concerns, but of failed urban planning.

If demolished, what comes next?

Should the demolition proceed, the future of the land becomes a major issue:
Will a government building be constructed?
Will it be opened for private development?
And does removing the structure truly resolve the security concern — or merely erase the visible problem?

Questions over behind-the-scenes decision-making

Discussions with administrative officials, urban planners, and security experts have revealed several inconsistencies. While security norms have evolved over time, decisions appear stuck in outdated frameworks.

Even if the Poonam Tower chapter closes, uncertainty over the site’s future remains. Nagpur now watches closely to see whether this prime plot once again becomes a battleground between power, security, and urban development – or finally finds a meaningful resolution.
