Nagpur: In a shocking case of animal cruelty, Pachpaoli Police rescued 12 cattle — including calves — from a congested shed in Azad Nagar, Teka, where they were allegedly held without food or water in preparation for illegal slaughter.
The raid was carried out in the early hours of June 4, between 3:40 am and 6:20 am, following a tip-off received during routine patrol. Acting swiftly, a police team reached the site and discovered the animals crammed into a narrow space in deplorable conditions inside a shed reportedly owned by one Imran Qureshi.
Mohsin Qureshi (31), a resident of Siddharth Nagar, Nai Basti Teka, has been arrested for illegally confining the animals. During questioning, Qureshi admitted that the cattle were being kept for slaughter.
The rescued animals were shifted to a local gaushala for care, while the items seized from the site — including makeshift enclosures and tools — were estimated to be worth Rs 1.81 lakh.
A case has been registered under Sections 5, 5(b), and 9 of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 (amended 1995), along with Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Police have assured that further investigation is underway to trace others possibly involved.
The operation was executed under the supervision of DCP Mehak Swami (Zone 3) and ACP Shweta Khade, with the active involvement of the Pachpaoli police team.
