Nagpur: Taking a decisive step towards clean and sustainable urban transport, Nagpur is set to roll out the PM E-Bus service on February 14, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurating the initiative. The city has been selected among the first four in the country for the launch, alongside Bhavnagar, Chandigarh and Guwahati, marking a significant milestone in Nagpur’s journey towards electric mobility.

Under the first phase, 30 state-of-the-art electric buses will be introduced on major routes across the city. The inauguration will take place simultaneously in all four cities, with the Prime Minister likely to attend the event in Guwahati in person while flagging off services in Nagpur and the other cities through virtual mode. A senior official from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Transport Department confirmed that the Prime Minister’s Office has conveyed the launch date, with formal written communication expected shortly.

Nagpur’s inclusion in the inaugural phase of the PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme reflects its growing prominence in the national urban transport roadmap. Preparations, which were earlier slowed due to the need for specialised manpower training, are now complete. More than 60 drivers and 89 conductors have successfully undergone training, with special emphasis on operating hydraulic ramps designed to assist wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility.

The city had received the first batch of 30 electric buses on November 17, 2025, out of the total 150 buses sanctioned under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme. Each 9-metre-long bus can accommodate around 30 passengers and is equipped with modern safety features, including six CCTV cameras and four digital display screens.

With infrastructure, manpower and approvals now firmly in place, Nagpur is ready to switch on a new chapter in public transport. Once operational, the PM e-buses are expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity, cut carbon emissions and offer a cleaner, faster and more inclusive commuting option for residents of the city.
