There was no relief from rising fuel prices from Budget 2018 presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on February 1. Jaitley announced a cut in excise duty on fuel by Rs 2. The Narendra Modi government also decided to do away with an additional excise duty on fuel by Rs 6. However, that made no difference to the rising petrol and diesel prices as this Rs 8 amount was converted to “road cess” on fuel, thereby, making no change in the price of petrol and diesel for the consumer effectively.

On Saturday, petrol price went down by 1 paise while diesel price also fell slightly after a month of continuous increase. However, the prices of fuel were back on the rise on Sunday. Today, while diesel price reached a new record high, the price of petrol was at a for-year high.

On Monday, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that just four states and one union territory have cut local sales tax or VAT on petrol and diesel since the October 2017 decision of the Centre to reduce excise duty on the two fuels. However, the spurt in international prices since then have negated the reductions and retail rates are more than October
