New Delhi/Nagpur:
Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui has been convicted by a Delhi court for raping an American researcher.

The Delhi Police had accused Farooqui of raping a 35-year-old American woman, who was in India to conduct research for her doctoral thesis from Columbia University.

Farooqui, however, had denied the allegations, saying he was falsely implicated.

On September 9 last, the court had started the trial in the case after framing charges of rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Farooqui.

The police had on June 19 last lodged an FIR against him on the complaint of the woman after which the filmmaker was arrested.

On June 29, a charge-sheet was filed against the filmmaker alleging he had raped the 35-year-old research scholar from Colombia University at his Sukhdev Vihar house in south Delhi on March 28.
