Nagpur:  Panic spread in the notorious red light area of the city Ganga Jamuna on Thursday after the cops raided the premises, causing the sex workers to run helter skelter. In the melee, a middle-aged-woman was seriously injured after a wall of a two-storeyed building collapsed and fell on her, spreading scare in the locality. The sex workers then assembled on the street and raised slogans against the police.

It may be noted here that that gullible girls from various parts of the country are housed here. They are lured into flesh trade by anti-social elements. This has been going on for several years now and the police too have been sometimes a party to this exploitation.

raid-ganga-jammuna-nagpurA Pune-based NGO has rescued several minor girls from the clutches of pimps from this area. They were helped by the senior police officials in this endeavour. However, after the reins were taken over by Abhinash Kumar as deputy commissioner of police (zone 3), the red light area is on the target of the police. Only a few days back, a raid was conducted in the locality causing many sex workers to flee the area. This has created a curfew-like situation in Ganga Jamuna.

Notices have been put on several places restricting the sex workers from indulging in pursuasion and from making gestures in public.

On Thursday, police raided the area around 12.30 pm. They ran after the sex workers standing in front of their houses with lathis. This created panic in the entire locality and sex worker ran for their lives. In the meantime, a wall of an under construction house gave in causing injuries to a 40-year-old-woman. She was rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

It may be noted here that the Ganga Jamuna locality has been in the grip of fear as cops are raiding the premises very often. This fear was not seen for years
