Nagpur: An RTI reply has revealed that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Nagpur has slapped notices to over 12,000 vehicle owners including 11,526 private vehicles and 720 commercial vehicles for non-payment of green tax. The State Government levies green tax on private vehicles that are more than 15 years old and commercial vehicles that have been plying for at least 8 years.
This information was provided to activist Abhay Kolarkar under Right to Information Act by RTO. The green tax or environmental tax is a tax imposed on environmental pollutants or on goods whose repeated use contributes to pollution. The state government has decided to impose the tax to limit the number of old vehicles in the city to curb air pollution. The RTI reply by RTO said that that 1,93,157 private vehicles did not pay the tax. According to information supplied, 741 motorcycles, 1108 light motor vehicles (petrol) and 206 light motor vehicles using diesel paid the green tax with interest in 2017.
