Offering drinking water proves costly for woman as accused attempts to snatch her mangalsutra

In what could be mentioned as a daring act, a goon gained entry into the house of the victim by requesting for a glass of water and when she brought water, the accused closed the mouth of the victim to stifle her cries and snatched the Mangalsutra and fled from the spot.

According to police sources, at around 2:30 pm on September 25, 2016, when the victim identified as Vaishali Dutta Khode aged 33 years and a resident of Plot No 65, Gayatri Nagar, Hazaripahad, Nagpur was alone in her home, the accused identified as Mukesh Shivanand Paswan aged 35 years and a resident of house near Asha Balwadi, Hazaripahad approached the victim and requested for a glass of drinking water. When the victim went inside the kitchen to get water, the accused went behind her and closed her mouth to stifle her cries with one hand and snatched the gold Mangalsutra worth Rs 60,000/- with the other hand. The accused then went on to press her neck and pushed her down and ran out, jumped the wall and was about to flee, when the neighbor caught him.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim, Police Sub Inspector Deshmukh of Gittikhadan Police Station registered a case against the accused under Sections 394 and 452 of Indian Penal Code and arrested the accused.
