Nagpur: Commuters traveling to and from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport are likely to face inconvenience starting Tuesday, as app-based cab drivers have suspended pick-up and drop services at the airport.
The protest has been called by the Taxi Vehicle Driver-Owner Joint Action Committee, which represents drivers associated with major ride-hailing platforms such as Ola and Uber.
According to the committee, the strike is in response to multiple unresolved issues affecting app-based cab drivers in the city. A primary demand is the immediate and permanent ban on bike taxi services, which drivers claim are impacting their earnings and operating conditions.
The drivers have also urged aggregators to strictly implement fares fixed by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), without offering discounts or reduced pricing. They have further demanded that fare charts be prominently displayed at the airport to ensure transparency for passengers.
Among other demands, the committee has called for better protection of drivers’ welfare. This includes ensuring that insurance policy details are shared with drivers’ families. The drivers have also proposed the establishment of prepaid taxi booths for app-based cabs at key transit points such as airports and railway stations.
In addition, the committee has suggested that if private aggregators fail to address these concerns, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation should introduce its own ride-hailing service, tentatively named “Orange City Taxi.” They stated that such a platform could be developed by the civic body’s IT department, providing both regulated services and an additional revenue stream for the corporation.
While expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers, the committee has held both the local administration and aggregator companies responsible for the situation. It emphasized that authorities must take necessary steps to safeguard the livelihood of drivers and prevent exploitation within the sector.
Passengers traveling via the airport are advised to make alternative transport arrangements until normal services resume.
