Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation is going to organize tax-recovery camps in each zone on August 23, Sunday, from 9 am to 1 pm, for four hours. Though Sunday is a holiday, the tax department officials and staff will have to work on that day. As per tradition, each camp in its zone will be formally inaugurated by NMC office-bearers.
According to tax committee chairman Girish Deshmukh, if the employees want their salary in time they will have to work even on holidays. The administration often complains that the tax department persons do not sincerely collect tax dues from citizens. So, they will have to forgo their holiday.
Those, who pay tax by cheques, will be issued receipt later (subject to realization of cheques), but those who pay tax dues in cash will be issued receipts on the spot.
It may be recalled that during Congress rule, late Gopinath Munde had staged a morcha demanding that ‘sasti’ (2% interest levied on outstanding tax dues) should be abolished. On this point, Girish Deshmukh is of the view that there is a provision in MMC Act that ‘sasti’ may be surcharged.
As on this date, the NMC has received Rs 129.83 crore revenue by LBT, Rs 52.7 crore by property tax and Rs 6.77 crore by Abhay Yojana. In the month of August it has received Rs 35 crore as revenue, which is less as compared to that of August in previous year.
In the camp, mutation cases would be disposed of but within 7-8 days, the audit of new property tax would be done within 15 days. In case of any mistake in demand it will be rectified immediately. There will be various counters for tax collection. The date line of Abhay Yojana has been extended up to August 31.
