Nagpur: The Enforcement Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation on Tuesday undertook anti-encroachment drive in Dhantoli, Ashi Nagar and Gandhibagh Zones.

In Dhantoli Zone, the NMC squad demolished 600 sq mtr illegal construction done by Dr Wamanrao Chandankhede at his residence at Plot No. 9, Vishwakarma Nagar. Dr Chandankhede was served with notice under Section 54 of MRTP Act and directed to stop the illegal construction. The action sparked massive protest and led to stopping of the anti-encroachment drive. Interestingly, Dr Chandankhede obstructed the anti-encroachment action by arguing that the NMC is dismantling his temple construction. Hence the action was stopped but a fine of Rs 15,000 was recovered from him.

In Ashi Nagar Zone, sheds of six roadside shops were demolished and a handcart was seized on a stretch of road from Indora Square-Kamal Talkies Square-Old Fire Brigade Office.

Similarly, vendors on footpath on road from Mahal to Agrasen Square to Golibar Square to Mominpura were removed. Two trucks of goods were seized in the drive.

The action was taken by Assistant Commissioner Ashok Patil, Enforcement Inspector Sanjay Kamble, and other staff Nitin Manthanwar, Sharad Irpate, Jamshed Ali with the cooperation of police.
