NMCNagpur: In a height of messy affairs, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has promoted a teacher who allegedly tampered two cheques of Rs 700 and Rs 800 and increased the amount to Rs 62,000 fraudulently. The ‘tainted’ teacher named Farooq Ahmed Khan was promoted as Acting Education Officer. This teacher was suspended twice for indulging in corrupt practices. Now, promotion of such ‘tainted’ teacher to the higher post underlines the shoddy affairs being run in the NMC.

The teacher was booked by Sakkardara police under Sections 409, 420, 468, 471 on February 18, 2013 for misappropriating funds sent by Central Government under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan between September 27, 2012 to October 3, 2012. Moreover, the ‘tainted’ teacher, during his stint in a Tajbagh School had tampered a cheque of School Management Committee and withdrew excess amount. Taking a serious note of the ‘fraud,’ a departmental enquiry was ordered by the then officials.

However, the probe report was ‘never’ submitted by NMC Administration in order to save its own employee. Earlier also, following financial irregularities during his stint in M K Azad School, this teacher was suspended. But the suspension was revoked as he had a very good “relations” with a higher official. But the wrongdoings did not stop here. Last year, the ‘tainted’ teacher was exposed for sending students of NMC’s Sanjay Gandhi School to a private school. When it came to light that the teacher had taken commissions from the private school per student he was suspended. But again the teacher’s suspension was revoked by the then Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane and Additional Municipal Commissioner on the condition that he would not be given any financial responsibilities. And with his promotion as Acting Education Officer, eyebrows are being raised as he would be handling the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan funds “authoritatively.”
