Nagpur: Even as the process for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections is underway, the draft voter list has put the administration on the defensive. After the list was published, a total of 1,327 objections were filed across the city, raising serious questions over the accuracy and preparedness of the civic body.
The highest number of complaints, 663 objections, came from the Laxminagar Zone, making it the most contentious zone in the city. In sharp contrast, the Headquarters Zone recorded only seven complaints, highlighting a striking disparity.
Residents have pointed out large-scale discrepancies including incorrect names, wrong addresses, duplicate entries, and wrongful deletions, prompting widespread dissatisfaction and protests in several pockets of the city.
Objections received zone-wise
The State Election Commission (SEC) has confirmed that the window for filing objections has closed and that scrutiny of all complaints has begun. The final voter list will be released on December 10, followed by the determination of polling booths by December 15. Once these procedures are completed, the official announcement of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation election is expected.
The scale of objections is significantly higher compared to the 2017 civic polls, when only 535 complaints were filed. The nearly three-fold increase this year reflects the seriousness of errors in the current draft list and has drawn criticism from political parties and civic activists.
