Nagpur: In a bid to streamline vehicular movement and decongest one of Nagpur’s busiest junctions, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated the redevelopment of Rupchand Jadhav Square, popularly known as ST Stand Square, in Ganeshpeth. The project will be executed as per the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines, ensuring better traffic management and commuter safety.

Under the new plan, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will realign the entry and exit points of buses at the ST Stand to eliminate long-standing traffic snarls, while the NMC will clear encroachments and enforce stricter regulation of auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws that often choke the junction.

A high-level inspection of the square was recently carried out by Central Nagpur MLA Pravin Datke, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani. They were accompanied by Additional Municipal Commissioner Vasumana Pant, Dhantoli Zone Assistant Commissioner Pramod Wankhede, Executive Engineer Ravindra Bundhade, former corporator Pramod Chikhale, and other senior civic and police officials.

During the inspection, Commissioner Chaudhari directed officials to clear all encroachments immediately and ensure compliance with traffic rules. He emphasized that the revamped square must allow unhindered flow of traffic, particularly during peak hours when MSRTC buses enter and exit the depot.

Traffic police authorities also assured that strict action would be taken against errant auto and e-rickshaw drivers violating parking norms. MSRTC, on its part, will alter the current bus movement system, which has been a major cause of congestion in the area.

MLA Datke noted that the oversized central traffic island was slightly obstructing smooth vehicular flow and suggested reducing its diameter. Responding to this, Chaudhari said that while the rotary has been designed according to IRC standards, the NMC will monitor traffic movement for a month and make necessary changes if needed.

Chaudhari reiterated that the administration’s priority is to ensure smoother traffic, pedestrian safety, and an organized flow of buses and private vehicles. “Once the encroachments are removed and the new layout is implemented, commuters will experience a visible improvement in traffic conditions around Ganeshpeth,” he assured.

The redevelopment work at Rupchand Jadhav Square marks another step in NMC’s broader plan to modernize key intersections across the city in line with national road safety and design standards.
