Nagpur: In a move to deter irresponsible citizens throwing garbage in nullahs, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started erecting iron fencing on bridges over nullahs in the city to prevent people from dumping waste.
Every year, NMC spends crores of rupees of public funds to clean the nullahs and each time post-cleaning garbage dump starts forming again. Further, as the garbage lies uncleared, a foul smell starts emanating from it. After much thought, it was decided to erect fencing so that the open access that allows people to dump garbage into the nullah would not be possible.
NMC has now initiated the process of barricading the open space on the bridges over the nullahs. About 58 nullahs have been identified in 10 Zones of city for erecting iron fencing that will be secured by the cage type structure. The start has been made with Laxmi Nagar Zone, where one such fencing has been erected on a bridge over the nullah at Sahakar Nagar.
Similarly, the same initiative has been taken at Ambazari Overflow Point in Dharampeth Zone, on Manewada-Besa road near Manewada Ghat and other five such places. Other spots where the fencings are erected are at Narendra Nagar Square,at Gangabai Ghat bridge and other four places in Nehru Nagar Zone, near Shanti Nagar Jain Temple nullah in Satranjipura and five other places, in Lakadganj Zone in five places at Ashok Square in Ashi Nagar Zone plus six places and in Mangalwari Zone at the Police Line Takli lake and five other places.
