Nagpur: A deeply troubling case has shaken the journalism community in Nagpur, throwing a harsh spotlight on workplace safety, power abuse, and institutional silence.
An aspiring woman journalist, Shreya Snehdeep Bhongade, is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Nagpur, where she has remained in critical mental and physical condition for the past 13 days. Her family alleges that sustained workplace harassment—followed by repeated denial of justice—pushed her into severe psychological distress.
Shreya earlier worked as an anchor with a local news channel with a vast cable network. According to her relatives, she began facing mental and sexual harassment from a senior accountant at the workplace. What reportedly started as professional communication gradually turned into obscene messages. Fearing loss of employment, she initially stayed silent.
When Shreya later approached the editor, the family claims her complaint was brushed aside and that she faced further humiliating treatment, worsening her trauma.
Her husband, Snehdeep Bhongade—himself a journalist—said the couple submitted a written complaint at Sitabuldi Police Station. He alleges they were discouraged from pursuing the matter, being warned that action against seniors would damage reputations and end careers. No FIR has been registered so far, raising serious questions about the police response.
After the complaint, Shreya’s department was changed, her responsibilities were reduced, and in October 2023 she was allegedly terminated. The family says prolonged unemployment that followed pushed her mental health into further decline.
The matter has since been taken up by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission, which has issued a notice to Sitabuldi police seeking an action report. However, the complainants maintain that no concrete action has been taken yet.
The journalist has also filed a police complaint against the editor and two others, alleging misuse of authority, mental harassment, and inappropriate conduct inside the newsroom itself. Police say further inquiry is underway.
As Shreya fights a serious mental health crisis in hospital, her husband and minor daughter are also bearing the fallout. For many in Nagpur, this is no longer just one woman’s ordeal-it is a stark reminder of alleged power abuse, fragile safeguards for women in media, and a justice system that appears slow to move when influence enters the room.
Pressure is now mounting on authorities for swift and transparent legal action against those accused.
