Nagpur: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday outlined a bold vision to develop the Nagpur region into a global business hotspot, announcing plans for “New Nagpur” — a dedicated Global Capability Centre (GCC) hub expected to create nearly five lakh jobs in the coming years.

Addressing a public interaction programme, “Tarri Poha with Devabhau”, moderated by comedian Bharat Ganeshpure and actor Spruha Joshi, Fadnavis said Maharashtra is gearing up to tap the next phase of global investments as multinational firms increasingly set up GCCs in India. He noted that these centres focus on high-end operations such as research, innovation and advanced services, rather than conventional IT work. “To attract such investments, we need entirely new business districts with iconic and future-ready infrastructure,” he said.

The proposed New Nagpur will be developed on around 700 hectares near the Samruddhi Expressway and is planned as a self-contained business district with walk-to-work facilities. Fadnavis said the state government has already begun receiving enquiries from international developers interested in the project. A new outer ring road connecting the upcoming business district is also on the anvil, with the government collectively investing over Rs 11,000 crore in the ring road and New Nagpur development.

Highlighting Nagpur’s historical context, the Chief Minister said the renewed thrust on the city and the Vidarbha region was aimed at correcting decades of developmental imbalance. He recalled that Nagpur, once the capital of Central Provinces and Berar, gave up that status to become part of a united Maharashtra. Today, he said, Nagpur has firmly established itself as the state’s third major metropolitan city after Mumbai and Pune, while retaining its unique cultural identity.

Fadnavis described Nagpur as a “city of models,” where several innovative projects were first implemented and later replicated elsewhere in the country. He cited infrastructure initiatives led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, including double-decker flyovers and integrated road-and-metro corridors, which have now become templates for other cities.

The Chief Minister also highlighted several civic and sustainability-focused initiatives underway in the city. These include electricity generation using treated sewage water, a 24×7 water supply project that has reduced water scarcity, an extensive network of cement roads and flyovers, and an upcoming waste-to-biogas project. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation, he said, will soon inaugurate a facility that converts 100% of municipal waste into biogas, enabling city buses to operate on CNG without tipping fees. The project is expected to be commissioned within the next two to three months.

Reflecting briefly on his political journey, Fadnavis said patience was the most important lesson he had learned in public life, adding that Nagpur’s growth story reflects a balance between rapid development and preservation of its social fabric.
