Nagpur: The NCP leader from Bhandara, who was booked for molesting a student and evading arrest for last 23 days, has finally surrendered to Andhalgaon police late on Sunday night, according to reports. The accused is Sumedh Shyamkunwar.
Following his surrender, police conducted his medical examination and later arrested him. The accused NCP leader had filed a plea in Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court for anticipatory bail but due to an affidavit by Bhandara police opposing bail to Sumedh, the court had rejected his plea.
According to reports, a case was registered against the NCP leader and former Zilla Parishad President Sumedh Shyamkunwar at Andhalgaon Police Station for molesting a Class X student in a hostel. The henous incident occurred on February 25. The case had caused a stir in political circles.
The hostel is run by a private organization at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk in Bhandara city. The victim student from Mohadi Taluka lives in this hostel. Sumedh Shyamkumar is the Director of the organization. The student had gone to her native village a few days back. The accused called the girl’s father and said he had come to pick her up. When the Director himself came to pick her up, her father believed him and put her in Shyamkunwar’s four-wheeler. On his way to Bhandara, the NCP leader stopped his four-wheeler at a deserted place on the road from Dongargaon to Vihirgaon. There she was molested. After that both of them came to the hostel. The girl narrated the incident to her friend. She informed the girl’s father about it. Later, the father went to Andhalgaon Police Station at night and lodged a complaint.
After receiving the complaint, police booked the accused under Section 354 of the IPC read with Section 8 of POCSO Act. A search for the accused was launched by police.
