Nagpur’s Yash strikes gold at Senior National Aquatic Championship; bags 3 medals

Nagpur: Adding another feather to Nagpur’s sporting achievements, international swimmer Yash Gulhane has made a remarkable splash at the national level, clinching three medals, including a coveted gold, at the inaugural Short Course Senior National Aquatic Championship 2026 held in Ahmedabad.

Representing Maharashtra, Gulhane delivered an impressive performance in the breaststroke and medley relay events at the prestigious championship conducted at the Veer Savarkar Aquatic Complex from October 25 to 28. His medal-winning performance comprised a gold in the 4×100m medley relay, a silver in the 100m breaststroke and a bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

The championship, organised by the Swimming Federation of India (SFI), marked a significant milestone as the federation’s first-ever national-level short-course swimming competition. Unlike conventional long-course events conducted in 50-metre pools, the competition was held in a 25-metre pool, testing swimmers’ speed, technique, turns and competitive endurance.

The national championship also assumed added importance as a platform for swimmers aspiring to secure qualification for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships 2026, scheduled to be held in Beijing, China, in December.

Gulhane’s latest achievement is particularly noteworthy considering his impressive performance at the 1st Short Course Senior State Level Aquatic Championships held earlier this month at the Asian Swimming Academy in Nashik. He had dominated the state-level competition by winning seven medals, including three gold, two silver and two bronze, thereby earning selection to represent Maharashtra at the national championship.

Continuing his winning momentum at the national stage, Gulhane demonstrated his competitive ability against some of the country’s finest swimmers, bringing recognition to Nagpur’s growing swimming talent.

Apart from his sporting commitments, Gulhane is pursuing his final year of BTech in Computer Science. He trains under the guidance of coaches Nitin Malwade and Roshan Chaudhary, while also receiving valuable guidance from Piyu Lahori, Dr Anil Trivedi and Dr Vinay Manwatkar.

Gulhane credited his achievements to the constant encouragement, support and motivation of his mother, Dr Pradnya, father Anil and brother Devesh, whose support has remained an important part of his sporting journey.

His three-medal haul at the inaugural national short-course championship marks another significant achievement in his swimming career and reinforces Nagpur’s presence on India’s competitive aquatic sports map.
