Nagpur: A Nagpur youth allegedly lost Rs 12 lakh in a fake government job racket after a group of men claimed to have strong connections in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Metro and other government offices and promised to secure him employment.
The alleged fraud came to light when the victim reached the Metro with an appointment letter handed over to him by the accused, only to discover that the document was fake. Shantinagar police have registered a case against seven persons and launched an investigation.
According to the complaint, Nikhil Masarke came in contact with accused Pratik Yuvraj Urade during the Ganesh festival in 2025. Urade allegedly told him that his friends had contacts in the NMC, Metro and other government offices and could arrange a government job for him.
Police said Nikhil was allegedly induced to pay money on the promise of securing employment. He reportedly paid a total of Rs 12 lakh in instalments.
To strengthen the confidence of the complainant, the accused allegedly provided him with an appointment letter purportedly showing that he had secured a government job.
However, when Nikhil approached the Metro with the document, its alleged fraudulent nature was exposed. He subsequently demanded the return of his money, but the accused allegedly kept delaying repayment.
Based on his complaint, Shantinagar police have booked Vishal Jadhav, Swapnil Sahare, Roshan Wankhede, Digambar Shinde, Sachin Rathod, Arvind Chaudhary and Pratik Yuvraj Urade.
Investigators are now examining the alleged financial transactions, the source and preparation of the fake appointment letter and the accused persons’ claims of having contacts in government offices.
Police are also probing whether other persons were involved in the alleged racket and whether other job-seekers may have been targeted in a similar manner.
