Nagpur: In a significant development following sustained public concern, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finally taken note of the neglected 300-year-old historic well located near the Old Airport Road, close to Sonegaon–Amrai Road and adjacent to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.
This action comes as a direct Nagpur Today Impact, as the issue was first highlighted and consistently raised on our platform.
A joint inspection was carried out by Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani along with corporators Amol Shyamkule and Ishwar Dhengale, Laxminagar Zone Deputy Commissioner Jadhav, and Fire Department Chief Barapatre along with their team.
A Forgotten Legacy of the Bhosale Era
Believed to have been constructed during the reign of Raghuji Bhonsle, the well is over three centuries old and once played a crucial role in the region’s structured water management system.
Today, however, the heritage structure is in a severely deteriorated state. It is filled with garbage, plastic waste, algae, and even liquor bottles—stripping it of its historical identity and dignity.
Heritage Meets Neglect
The well is located in a naturally rich and serene environment, surrounded by greenery and flanked by ancient temples, including a Hanuman Temple and a Shri Krishna Temple. Despite being slightly away from dense habitation, the area attracts a large number of citizens daily for morning and evening walks.
It has also become a popular hangout spot for youth, who frequently organize picnics, birthday celebrations, and small gatherings. Unfortunately, irresponsible disposal of waste after such activities has further worsened the condition of the site.
Structural Risk and Cultural Value
The architectural structure of the well is now turning hazardous. Several portions of its stone walls have collapsed, and it features traditional stone steps leading downwards—an important hallmark of historic Bhosale-era construction.
The design and stonework clearly reflect the ancient engineering practices of that period, making it not just a water source but a valuable heritage asset.
Citizen-Led Effort That Sparked Action
The issue was actively pursued by local residents, morning walkers, and social groups including Telecom Nagar Mahila Mandal, Pratap Nagar News Group, Nagpur My Love, Green Nagpur Group, and Janshakti Manch.
Under the leadership of journalist and social activist Sachin Dravekar, these groups raised the matter with the District Collector, local MLA, corporators, and relevant departments, demanding immediate restoration and conservation of the well.
Restoration Orders Issued
Following the inspection, Shivani Dani has directed authorities to initiate immediate restoration and conservation efforts.
Speaking on the occasion, Dani and Sachin Dravekar emphasized that once revived, the well could serve multiple purposes:
- Watering nearby trees and preserving the Amrai green belt
- Supporting irrigation needs of gardens near the airport area
- Acting as an alternative water source during emergencies
A Wake-Up Call
This development highlights the power of civic awareness and media intervention. However, the real test now lies in timely execution.
The administration has stepped in-but whether this historic gem is truly restored or slips back into neglect will depend on sustained action, accountability, and responsible public behavior.
