Nagpur steps up efforts to trace tourists stranded in Nepal floods

Nagpur: With flash floods in northern Nepal leaving hundreds dead and scores of tourists missing, the Nagpur district administration has launched an online facility to trace tourists from the city and district who may be stranded in the flood-hit areas. Families can submit details of missing tourists, including their mobile numbers and location or hotel in Nepal, through the administration’s online portal.

The move comes as the Maharashtra Government has activated a 24-hour control room and registration facility to track residents of the state stranded in Nepal. According to the Maharashtra Disaster Management Department, around 80 tourists from Maharashtra are currently reported to be stranded in the neighbouring country.

105 Indians among foreign nationals reported missing

The Nepal Tourism Board’s preliminary situation update issued on August 26 reported that 384 travellers, 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, were missing from the affected areas. Of the foreign nationals, 105 were Indians and 37 were NRIs, according to information received from travel and tourism companies.

The Nepal Tourism Board has also established emergency communication channels, including toll-free number 1234, hotline 1144 and Tourism Police number 9851289445.

Around 300 Indians feared missing

The disaster has devastated the Nepal-Tibet border region after a massive wall of mud and rock collapsed into the Bhote Koshi river in Rasuwa district, triggering catastrophic flash floods through towns and valleys.

Around 1,500 people, including approximately 300 Indians, are reported missing across Nepal and Tibet. Roads and other infrastructure have been severely damaged, complicating rescue operations and efforts to establish communication with tourists.

Meanwhile, five tourists from Amravati district returned safely on Wednesday, while authorities are trying to ascertain the whereabouts of four people from Pune who were travelling for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Helplines activated

The Maharashtra Government has appealed to families who have lost contact with relatives in Nepal to register their details with the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

Citizens requiring assistance can contact the toll-free helpline 1070 or the state control room at +91-9321587143. They can also email controlroom@maharashtra.gov.in.

Families have been asked to provide the missing person’s name and mobile number, current location or hotel in Nepal, travel details and a family contact number wherever available.

With communication links disrupted in several flood-hit areas, authorities in Maharashtra are coordinating with families, travel agencies and Nepalese authorities to establish the whereabouts of missing tourists and facilitate their safe return.
