Nagpur: In a disturbing development that has raised serious questions over discipline within the police force, an Assistant Police Inspector (API) posted at the Cyber Police Station in Nagpur has been accused of physically assaulting and verbally abusing a constable inside the station premises.
According to sources, the incident occurred around noon during a heated argument between the API and the constable over the handling of a case. What began as a professional disagreement allegedly escalated into misconduct, with the officer reportedly snatching the constable’s mobile phone before physically attacking and abusing him in front of colleagues.
The public nature of the alleged assault has intensified concerns about internal conduct and the working environment within the department.
Following the incident, the aggrieved constable left the police station and directly approached senior officials at the Police Bhavan. He later met Joint Commissioner of Police Naveenchandra Reddy and lodged a formal complaint detailing the incident.
Taking serious note of the allegations, Reddy has ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter. The probe has been assigned to the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), and officials have indicated that strict action will follow if the allegations are substantiated.
Sources suggest that the dispute may be linked to an ongoing fraud investigation being handled at the Cyber Police Station, where both officers are part of the same team. However, the exact trigger behind the altercation remains unclear and is expected to be established during the inquiry.
Insiders have also pointed to a pattern of alleged high-handed behaviour by the API, claiming that several staff members have faced similar treatment in the past. Despite this, the officer is said to have maintained a strong standing with successive senior officials, often gaining their confidence quickly.
The incident has once again spotlighted the need for accountability and professional conduct within law enforcement agencies. Allegations of misconduct within the force not only affect internal morale but also raise broader concerns about public trust.
Joint CP Reddy stated that a thorough inquiry is underway and that the truth will emerge only after a detailed investigation.
