Nagpur: After remaining largely subdued for more than a week, monsoon activity over Nagpur and adjoining parts of Vidarbha showed only a marginal revival on Monday, with light rain reported from several parts of the city and district. The showers, however, remained too weak to bring any significant improvement in the rainfall situation, with the cumulative deficit reportedly widening to around 20 per cent.
Despite a rise of more than 3°C in the maximum temperature, weather conditions remained relatively pleasant in the city. Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C and a minimum of 22.6°C on Monday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area extending from Chhattisgarh to eastern Madhya Pradesh is influencing weather conditions over the region. The system is currently not strong enough to trigger widespread or heavy rainfall, but its presence, coupled with moisture-laden winds from the northeast, is generating light showers and drizzle over Nagpur and neighbouring areas.
The IMD’s climatological data show that August normally remains an important rainy month for Nagpur, with an average rainfall of about 277.2 mm and around 13.5 rainy days. The month is also known for intermittent breaks in monsoon activity, during which temperatures rise and conditions turn humid.
No strong rain system at present
Weather officials said there is presently no sufficiently strong system over the region to produce sustained heavy rainfall. The moisture being transported towards Vidarbha is instead resulting in localised cloud formation, light showers and occasional drizzle.
The prevailing pattern means that rainfall is likely to remain uneven, with some pockets receiving showers while other parts of Nagpur may remain largely dry. A significant spell of widespread rain would require a stronger and more favourable monsoon system to develop over central India.
The latest national weather outlook from the IMD indicates that central India, including Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh, remains among the regions that can receive rainfall during the current period, although the intensity and distribution are expected to vary.
Temperature rises after prolonged rain break
The prolonged lull in moderate to heavy rainfall has already pushed temperatures upward. The maximum temperature of 32.8°C recorded on Monday was more than 3°C higher than the levels seen during the recent wetter spell.
Nevertheless, the presence of moisture in the atmosphere has prevented conditions from becoming excessively hot. The combination of higher daytime temperatures and humidity could, however, make the weather feel warmer than the recorded temperature, particularly during afternoon hours.
The weather pattern is also typical of a monsoon break. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Nagpur, notes that such breaks are common during August, while wet spells can return when stronger monsoon systems move across central India.
Rainfall deficit becomes a concern
The rise in Nagpur’s rainfall deficit to around 20 per cent has added to concerns over the uneven distribution of monsoon rain. While the city and several parts of Vidarbha have experienced substantial spells of rain earlier in the season, the prolonged dry phase has widened the gap between actual and normal rainfall.
For residents, the immediate impact of the break has been a shift from frequent rain and cooler conditions to warmer and more humid weather. For agriculture and water resources, however, the distribution and continuity of rainfall remain more important than isolated light showers.
Weather officials are therefore keeping a close watch on the movement and development of weather systems over central India. A stronger low-pressure system or favourable monsoon circulation could quickly revive rainfall activity, while a continuation of the present weak phase could further increase the rainfall deficit.
For now, Nagpur is likely to experience intermittent light rain or drizzle rather than a prolonged heavy spell, with cloudy conditions and humidity continuing to influence the weather.
