Nagpur: In a major breakthrough, the Railway Police Nagpur have solved a high-value theft case involving gold jewellery worth over Rs 22 lakh stolen from a passenger during a train journey.
The complainant, Harishchandra Radhakrishna Chandwani (65), a resident of Raipur in Chhattisgarh, was travelling with his family on Train No. 20845 Bikaner Express from Raipur to Ujjain on March 28, 2026. During the journey, his wife was resting on her berth with a ladies’ purse placed under her head, which contained gold ornaments and Rs 20,000 in cash, totalling approximately Rs 22.7 lakh.
At around 2:15 am on March 29, 2026, when the train halted at Nagpur railway station, she woke up to find the purse missing. A search of the coach led to the discovery of the bag in the bathroom, but it had been emptied of all valuables. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at the Railway Police Station Nagpur under relevant sections of the law.
During the investigation, police examined more than 200 CCTV camera recordings from Nagpur railway station and surrounding areas. A suspicious individual was identified leaving the station shortly after the theft. Further technical analysis revealed that the accused had booked a Rapido bike ride, which helped police trace his mobile number and location to Nanded district.
A special police team was immediately formed and sent to Nanded. Acting on intelligence inputs, officers tracked the suspect’s movement as he travelled back toward Nagpur via private transport. Several vehicles were checked along the route, and at Rahate Colony in Nagpur, the suspect attempted to flee during inspection of a private travel bus. However, police chased and apprehended him.
The accused was identified as Rohit Maroti Duyyewar (23), a resident of Nanded who was staying in Nagpur. Initially, he attempted to mislead investigators, but after being confronted with CCTV evidence, he confessed to committing the theft. Police recovered gold jewellery worth ₹17.43 lakh from his possession, while efforts to trace the remaining stolen property are ongoing.
In a surprising twist, the accused is a well-educated student pursuing veterinary studies in Nagpur. Police revealed that he resorted to theft after incurring losses in online betting, highlighting a growing concern over gambling-related crimes.
The investigation is being led by Police Inspector Gaurav Gavande under the guidance of senior railway police officials. The accused has been remanded to police custody, and further investigation is underway.
