Nagpur: A 24-year-old undertrial accused in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) case managed to escape from the custody of Nagpur police while undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital, triggering a search operation that ended with his detention in Chhattisgarh.
The accused, identified as Bomtya alias Sheikh Sameer Sheikh Rahim, a resident of Chitranjan Nagar in Kamptee and currently lodged in Nagpur Central Jail, was undergoing treatment in Ward No. 10 of the Medical Hospital when he allegedly made his escape on September 19.

According to the complaint filed by police constable Abdul Sohel Nisar, 30, the incident took place between 9.30 am and 10.30 am. Hospital cleaning staff reportedly told the police personnel deployed to guard the accused that cleaning and mopping work had to be carried out and asked them to remain outside the ward.
While the policemen were waiting outside, the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and escaped through a washroom window that did not have a protective grill.
The escape came to light shortly afterwards, following which Ajni police registered a case under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint of the police constable.
The incident triggered a coordinated search operation by Nagpur City Police. Multiple teams were formed and deployed to trace the accused, with officers examining possible locations and leads regarding his movements.
The breakthrough came when New Kamptee police received specific information about the accused’s whereabouts in Durg, Chhattisgarh. Acting on the information, police teams detained him and subsequently handed him over to Ajni police for further legal action.
Police said further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape is underway, including how the accused managed to evade the security arrangements at the hospital.
