Nagpur: Panic gripped the IT Park area of Nagpur on Thursday afternoon after an Indian cobra was found trapped inside the engine compartment of an Ola cab parked opposite Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT).
The incident came to light when the cab driver noticed the snake inside the engine bay before starting the vehicle. Realising the potential danger, he immediately switched off the vehicle and alerted people nearby. Within minutes, a crowd gathered at the spot as news of the venomous snake spread.
Upon receiving information about the incident, local snake rescuer Prashant Kawade, accompanied by fellow rescuers Pawan Gupta and Lalit Prajapati, rushed to the scene. According to the rescue team, they had received the call nearly an hour earlier and immediately initiated a rescue operation after assessing the situation.
Rescuers said the snake had been trapped inside the engine compartment for some time and was repeatedly attempting to free itself. Considering the confined space and the fact that the reptile was venomous, the team carried out the operation with extreme caution to ensure the safety of both the animal and the public.
After a painstaking rescue operation, the snake was safely removed from the vehicle. It was identified as an Indian cobra, one of India’s commonly found venomous snake species.
Speaking after the rescue, snake rescuer Prashant Kawade said that although Indian cobras generally avoid human contact, they can become defensive and aggressive when they feel threatened or trapped. He added that special care was taken during the operation to prevent injury to the snake as well as the rescuers.
The cab driver’s prompt action was widely appreciated. Instead of attempting to remove the snake himself or driving the vehicle, he chose to stop immediately and seek professional assistance, a decision that likely prevented a serious accident.
The rescued cobra was safely secured by the rescue team and will be released into a suitable natural habitat in accordance with wildlife guidelines. No injuries were reported during the operation, and the snake was also rescued unharmed.
The incident once again highlights the importance of seeking expert help whenever snakes or other wild animals are found inside vehicles. Wildlife rescuers advise people never to handle such situations on their own, as doing so can pose a serious risk to both humans and the animal.
Thanks to the swift response and careful handling by the snake rescue team, a potentially dangerous situation was resolved safely, protecting both the cab driver and the venomous reptile.
