Nagpur: A day after the site witnessed intense agitation and heavy police deployment, the protest ground on Nagpur–Wardha Road now stands silent and deserted. Scattered mud, torn banners, and the footprints of thousands of farmers are all that remain of the massive ‘Maha Elgar Andolan.’ The protest, led by former minister Bacchu Kadu, has now shifted from the streets to the legal arena, with multiple FIRs filed against thousands of participants for blocking traffic and obstructing the highway.
For two straight days, Kadu and his supporters had staged demonstrations on the city’s key Wardha Road, demanding complete loan waivers and debt relief for distressed farmers across Vidarbha. The protest drew the attention of the state government as well as the Bombay High Court. After receiving assurances from ministers and directives from the court, Kadu agreed to briefly reopen the route on Wednesday night and later announced the suspension of his planned ‘Rail Roko Andolan.’
Protest Site Flooded After Heavy Rain
Late Wednesday night, heavy rains lashed Nagpur, leaving the main protest site near Jamtha waterlogged and unfit for camping. The demonstrators then shifted to the Khapri (Railway) community hall, where they remain under close police surveillance. Meanwhile, Bacchu Kadu has travelled to Mumbai for talks with senior government officials regarding farmers’ demands for compensation and loan relief. His aides have stated that the next move will depend on the outcome of these discussions. Protesters in Nagpur continue to await his directions.
Fewer Protesters, But Steadfast Support
While the number of protesters has reduced, small groups of farmers, agricultural labourers, and differently-abled individuals continue to hold ground at the Khapri site. Support continues to pour in from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), various farmers’ unions, and local voluntary organisations that are providing food, water, and other essentials. Many farmers from nearby villages have temporarily returned home but have vowed to rejoin if the Mumbai talks fail to yield positive results.
Heavy Police Vigil on Wardha Road
Even as calm returns, a strong police presence remains along the Wardha Road stretch and around Jamtha. Barricades continue to line key intersections, with authorities staying alert for any renewed agitation. A senior Nagpur Police officer told Lokmat Times that while the administration respects the farmers’ right to protest, any fresh attempt to block public roads will face strict legal consequences.
The officer also confirmed that FIRs have been filed against Bacchu Kadu, Raju Shetti, and several others for unlawful assembly and highway obstruction, with further investigations underway to identify additional participants.
With Kadu now engaged in high-level deliberations in Mumbai, Nagpur awaits clarity — will the ‘Maha Elgar Andolan’ resume, or will government assurances bring temporary calm to the farmers’ unrest?
