Nagpur : In a shocking revelation, it was learnt that the Central government’s much-hyped ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme has not found its way to Nagpur, the home district of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Padnavis. This information was provided by the district administration on a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar.

On government order, the Women and Child Welfare department had started implementing the said scheme in 10 districts of Maharashtra in 2015. The government issued another order in 2016 adding six more districts under the sceheme. Presently the scheme is implemented in Maharashtra’s 16 districts, which doesn’t include Nagpur and five other districts coming under Nagpur division. Those districts are Wardha, Chandrapur, Bhadara, Gondia and Gadchiroli.

Under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, the administration undertakes measures to prevent female foeticide and facilitate education opportunities among deprived girls. The district administration claimed that it conducted many programs mentioned in the said scheme. However, Nagpur didn’t receive the grants and facilities that the selected districts were entitled to.

Resident Deputy Collector Ravindra Khajanchi claimed that the administration conducted many programs to check female foeticide. Many sonography centres were issued notices and few were shut down on found guity. Education programs were conducted for deprived girls. But the decision to include Nagpur division in the scheme could be taken by the government only, he said.
