Nagpur: In a decisive move to stamp out black-marketing and illegal hoarding of LPG cylinders, the city police on Tuesday launched an intensive enforcement drive across Nagpur. Acting on instructions from Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal, all police stations have been directed to conduct rigorous inspections in their respective jurisdictions and take stern action against those involved in the unlawful sale or stockpiling of domestic and commercial cylinders.
The crackdown follows growing complaints from residents and businesses over the shortage of LPG cylinders and allegations that certain unscrupulous elements are exploiting the situation by selling cylinders at inflated rates in the black market.
Taking the matter seriously, Commissioner Singal said that the police department has mobilised dedicated teams to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the supply chain remains free from illegal interference.
“We have constituted two special squads from the Crime Branch to keep strict vigil on black-marketing of LPG cylinders. All police stations have been instructed to intensify checking in their areas and work in coordination with LPG distributors,” he said.
Police officials have been asked to regularly visit LPG distribution centres and maintain close communication with authorised distributors to ensure that cylinders are being delivered to consumers through proper and lawful channels. In addition, surprise inspections are being carried out at storage facilities, warehouses and other suspected locations where illegal stockpiling of cylinders could take place.
The police have also prepared a list of known offenders who were previously involved in black-marketing or illegal trade of LPG cylinders. These history-sheeters are now under surveillance to prevent them from returning to the same illegal activities.
“We have identified several individuals who were earlier involved in such offences. Our teams are keeping a close watch on them. If anyone is found hoarding cylinders or selling them illegally, strict legal action will be taken,” the Commissioner added.
Meanwhile, police patrolling has been intensified across several parts of the city to detect suspicious movement related to the storage or transportation of LPG cylinders. Authorities have also appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and immediately inform the nearest police station if they come across any instance of hoarding or black-marketing.
The city police have made it clear that any attempt to manipulate LPG supplies for profiteering will invite stringent action.
