Nagpur: The city’s transport committee has decided to register criminal cases and recover a total of ₹32,39,710 from three private bus operators after bus chassis and equipment were found missing from buses operated under the city’s Aapli Bus service.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the municipal transport committee chaired by Mangala Khekre at the Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Memorial Standing Committee Hall on Wednesday. Committee members and transport department officials were present at the meeting.
Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Nagpur Municipal Corporation had received 237 buses for operating the city bus service. Three operators—Hansa City Bus Services, R.K. City Bus Services, and Travel Time City Bus Services—were appointed to run the buses, with each operator responsible for 79 buses.
After 123 buses completed their 15-year service period, the process of scrapping them was initiated. During a survey conducted as part of the scrapping process, it was found that bus chassis and certain internal materials were missing from several buses. Notices were issued to the concerned companies seeking explanations, but none of the operators responded.
Following their failure to provide clarification, the committee decided to initiate criminal proceedings against all three operators.
The transport department conducted valuation of the missing items through the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Based on the assessment, the recovery amounts have been fixed as follows:
Hansa City Bus Services: ₹16,99,490
R.K. City Bus Services: ₹3,77,920
Travel Time City Bus Services: ₹11,62,300
If the companies fail to pay the recovery amount within the stipulated period, the dues will be adjusted from their future payments to the municipal corporation.
Approval for Security Guards at Bus Depots
In the same meeting, approval was also granted to appoint 87 private security guards at seven municipal bus depots and at Mor Bhavan 1 and Mor Bhavan 2 to ensure the safety of buses and depot property. The guards will be deployed across three shifts to maintain round-the-clock security.
