Nagpur: A judicial prisoner was allegedly assaulted by two fellow inmates inside Nagpur Central Jail on Tuesday morning. The incident took place between Barracks 7 and 8 in the Chhoti Gol section of the prison.
According to Dhantoli Police, the incident occurred between approximately 9:40 am and 10:20 am. The victim has been identified as Vijay Nandlal Rehangdale, a judicial prisoner.
Prisoner Attacked While Returning to Barrack
Police said Rehangdale had gone to the Hanuman temple located inside the jail to offer prayers. While he was returning to his barrack at around 9:40 am, prisoners Durgesh alias Little Pramod Gupta and Ashwin alias Acchi Mukund Indurkar allegedly stopped him.
The two inmates allegedly assaulted Rehangdale without any provocation. They reportedly kicked and punched him and also allegedly hit him with a plastic bucket.
Rehangdale sustained an injury to his head during the assault.
Jail Staff Intervene
The commotion reportedly alerted jail officials and other staff members. Prison constable Manoj Balu Dhanwat, along with other jail personnel, immediately rushed to the spot.
The officials intervened and separated the prisoners. Rehangdale was subsequently taken to the jail hospital for medical treatment.
Third Prisoner Allegedly Threatened Jail Staff
Police said another prisoner, Surendra alias Monu Manoj Samudre, later created a disturbance inside the jail. According to police, Samudre was not involved in the assault on Rehangdale.
Samudre allegedly argued with jail staff during the incident. When subordinate-grade employee Nimje attempted to pacify him, Samudre allegedly moved towards the official, threatened him and tried to prevent him from carrying out his lawful duties.
