Nagpur: The real estate sector in Nagpur stands exposed, reeling under mounting criticism as shocking RTI revelations uncover a disturbing surge in consumer grievances against builders and developers.

According to data procured by Nagpur-based activist Abhay Kolarkar from the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, a staggering 2,097 complaints were filed against errant builders in Nagpur district between January 2022 and September 2025, making real estate disputes the largest share of all consumer cases in the city.

The numbers paint a grim picture. In 2022, builders accounted for 571 out of 938 complaints (over 60%), followed by 430 of 815 cases (53%) in 2023. The situation worsened in 2024, with 682 out of 901 complaints (76%) targeting developers. Even in 2025, up to September, 414 of 539 total complaints (77%) were against builders, a clear sign of eroding consumer trust.

Adding to the concern is the growing backlog of unresolved cases. Between 2022 and 2025, a total of 3,193 complaints were registered, but hundreds remain pending each year. Official records show 910 cases pending in 2022, 783 in 2023, and 866 in 2024, with 530 still awaiting resolution as of September 2025.

While 1,394 verdicts have so far been delivered in favour of consumers and 261 against, the slow pace of justice continues to frustrate aggrieved homebuyers. Experts argue that the figures underscore a systemic failure of accountability, urging both government and regulatory bodies to tighten enforcement and ensure speedy redressal.

Consumer rights activists have demanded that authorities launch strict punitive action against habitual offenders and mandate transparency in real estate transactions. “These numbers reflect not just negligence but deep-seated exploitation in Nagpur’s property market,” said one activist. “Buyers are losing both money and faith, while developers continue to flout norms with impunity.”

With property investments soaring and housing demand rising, the revelations have renewed calls for clean, ethical, and transparent business practices to restore consumer confidence in Nagpur’s booming but increasingly mistrusted real estate sector.
