Nagpur: With the countdown to the Maharashtra Legislature’s Winter Session beginning in Nagpur gathering pace, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari has directed all government departments to complete their respective preparations at Vidhan Bhavan before November 19, when officials and staff are scheduled to start arriving at the complex.

The administration has begun tightening its preparations for the annual legislative event, which will bring ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats, government employees and media personnel to Maharashtra’s Second Capital. The massive influx is expected to put additional pressure on Nagpur’s roads, traffic management, public utilities and civic infrastructure.

At a review meeting held on Wednesday, Bidari took stock of the arrangements, assessing infrastructure readiness, public services, security-related coordination and the responsibilities assigned to various government agencies. She instructed departments to avoid last-minute scrambling and complete their assignments within the stipulated deadlines.

Traffic management, public facilities in focus

Anticipating a substantial rise in vehicular movement during the session, Bidari stressed the need for comprehensive traffic planning to prevent congestion and ensure smooth movement across the city, particularly around important government establishments.

The administration has also taken into account the possibility of demonstrations, protests and marches by social organisations, employee unions and other groups during the session. Bidari directed officials to ensure adequate medical facilities at protest locations and keep health teams on standby to respond to emergencies.

Arrangements for mobile toilets at appropriate locations were also emphasised to provide basic amenities to protesters, visitors and local residents.

Departments asked to work in coordination

Highlighting the importance of inter-departmental coordination, the Divisional Commissioner cautioned that the work of one agency should not obstruct the preparations being undertaken by another. She called for joint decisions wherever necessary to ensure that arrangements proceed without administrative hurdles.

The Police, Revenue, Public Works, Health and Transport departments, along with local civic bodies, have been assigned specific responsibilities for the Winter Session. Their coordinated functioning will be crucial to managing the additional administrative and public-service demands during the Assembly’s stay in Nagpur.

The meeting was attended by Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, District Collector Kumar Ashirwad, Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police Harsh Poddar and Divisional Joint Commissioner Tushar Mathkar, among other senior officials.

With November 19 set as the deadline for completing arrangements at Vidhan Bhavan, the administration is now under pressure to ensure that infrastructure, public convenience and coordination mechanisms are in place well before the arrival of the first batch of officials.
